Intermunicipal cooperation projects in Moldova

Municipalities in the Republic of Moldova will receive grants for the implementation of 10 intermunicipal cooperation projects.

They will be supported in launching new public services, as waste collection, street lighting, road maintenance etc. The projects will improve the lives of over 120 000 people. The total amount of grants offered is 1 million USD.

Most of these grants will be allocated for the purchase of multifunctional equipment.

Funding was provided by the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP), which signed today grant contracts with 40 mayors. The Programme is coordinated by the State Chancellery and is implemented by UNDP and UN Women, with the support of the Government of Denmark.

Intermunicipal cooperation is a new tool used by local government in Moldova. It implies the cooperation of several municipalities to create a common public utility company. The mechanism is a useful solution especially for small towns, with less than 5000 inhabitants, not having sufficient resources for certain public services.

In this assignment, Business Consulting Institute has provided consulting services and conducted feasibility studies in four groups of localities. Implemented projects will create new intermunicipal services (road maintenance and waste collection) and will improve infrastructure (by the renovation of an alley between two villages).
